100 words on “Red Bird” from The Wanderlings Volume One
Two orphans raised in poverty and working for their keep, attend school in winter. Underclothed and malnourished, they encounter a red bird in the woods and follow it to Sunnymeade, a magical place where it is ever-spring and children are loved and free. The original story by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren is a tale of rescue and belonging. While the truth of the children’s fate is clear when they close the door between worlds for good, I love the thought of some otherworldly foster mother who has room and love for all children who might find their way to her.
