Villainizing the Other

“Carving Knife” from Carving Knife [single]

We were written to be foils and to be foiling, ever-burning, ever-boiling. There are unquestionable villains, but this song isn’t about them. It’s for the characters in fairytales who get painted that way when they have ambition or choose to take advantage of a situation, and for those who are othered by the conventions of oral storytelling traditions. When I recorded this song originally with just the piano, in my head there was an accompanying hard rock band that the remix brings to life. I want better than your charming life. I am other; I am otherwise a carving knife.
