  1. Burn Bone Dry

From the recording 12 Months a Year

It took me more thank 40 years to figure out I was ace/aro. I cycle between modes: asexual, where sexual energy makes me uncomfortable; and aromantic, where sexual energy is great, but I have no interest in romantic connections or monogamous relationships.

There is never a time when I want to be tethered to another person the way romantic partners are joined to one another. For others it may bring stability, but for me it only brings chaos. The best way I have found to describe it is to look to the shore. I can be beach, seabed, or somewhere between.

Sand is only that; and yet its state of being changes depending on the tide. It dries out with clarity in the sun and is beach. When the water rolls in, it becomes seabed and hosts an entirely different ecosystem. Same sand, always transforming, transitioning forever.

Lyrics

The tide goes out
At first it's all this gorgeous emptiness
Drying out to glitter in the sun
You go explore
And find the rock pools full of promises
Waiting for the water rise to come

It's only sand that's been abandoned
Left to burn bone dry
When the shore again becomes the sea floor
Does it miss the sky?

The tide comes in
At first the pressure is wet and delicate
Sinking in to wait expectantly
You hold your ground
And dare the shallows not to weigh you down
Beating with the rhythm of the sea

It's only sand that was abandoned
Left to burn bone dry
When the shore again becomes the sea floor
Does it miss the sky?

All the waves
Hundreds coming in
All the grains
Millions giving in
Millions giving in
Giving in

It's only sand that's been abandoned
Left to burn bone dry
But when the shore again becomes the sea floor
Does it miss the sky?

Only sand has been abandoned
Left to burn bone dry
But when the shore again becomes the sea floor
Does it miss the sky or does it say goodbye?

Does it miss the sky?
Does it say goodbye?
