  1. Open Road

From the recording 12 Months a Year

After recent years of sedentary life, and of the welcome stillness and peace of being home, I miss the open road. I had planned to take a road trip out to Winnipeg in September, but alas, cars are expensive beasts to keep and the means I needed to take the trip ate up all my funds.

I've had the privilege to travel across the southern part of Canada in my lifetime (BC to NS), I've driven through 48 states and the height and breadth of Ireland. Road trips have been my family vacations, pilgrimages, adventures and travelling for work. They make up a huge number of my best memories.

When I first drove across the US on my own, I wanted to see who I was as I travelled. Which pieces stuck, and which pieces fell away. From coast to coast and border to border I drove. I miss those long, lonely, wonderful stretches of road with only my thoughts for company.

Lyrics

I went to see the tumbleweeds
and the Joshua trees
and the pieces of me that stuck

I went to find the boundary line
with the rest behind
and a bottle of wine for luck

But I didn't need luck
cuz I wasn't stuck

It's the open road
with a hundred miles to go
before I get to where I'm going
that's gone

I went to where the salt sea air
and the sun on my hair
came to find me there I stood

I went to ask for another task
with an empty flask
If only I could fill this glass I would

And then I understood
that I always would

It's the open road
with a hundred miles to go
before I get to where I'm going

It's the open road
with a hundred miles to go
before I get to where I'm going
before I get to where I'm going
before I get to where I'm going
that's gone
