Leslie: Another song for the #poisonerchallenge complete! This one is about a relationship with an imagined lover, inspired by the poisonous and hallucinogenic plant, Thornapple, aka Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium).
Michael did such a beautiful job laying down these layers and weaving my vocals into them. Truly magical and dreamy, with just enough madness to suit the task at hand.
Michael: I hadn't planned on doing a collaboration this year as I never know how much commitment I can make due to work, but this was too good to pass up. The whole concept is brill and Leslie had me at the mention of psychedelic.
Leslie reached out and explained the idea and we chatted back and forth. I asked a lot of questions, probably to an annoying degree, but I wanted to make sure I understood what Leslie wanted and they were very patient with me.
The verse and chorus are in Db/C# Dorian because why not? Seriously, Dorian just lends itself so well to dreamy, psychedelic sounds. It's all over Pink Floyd's work. The bridge moves to Db Aeolian or pure minor. I won't list all the gear (although there is a healthy dose of Omnisphere) but will say there is a lot of tape emulation (Saturn, Dirty Tape, etc.) on this to get that nice, dreamy sound. The only other real challenge was to use sounds that didn't clash with Leslie's beautiful low register.
